LaTeX manuscripts from your AI app
On this page
Your AI app can hand Papex a paper as LaTeX source, section by section. Papex typesets it. You read the PDF, edit sections if you want, and sign that exact PDF.
What the app sends#
- Sections. Each has a plain-text heading and the LaTeX under it. A section is numbered, part of the appendix, or unnumbered (
\section*). Appendix sections come after the numbered ones. - Definitions (optional). Macros and theorem environments for the whole paper.
- Figures (optional). PNG or JPEG files named
fig-<name>.pngorfig-<name>.jpg, used as\includegraphics{fig-<name>.png}.
Papex writes the preamble, the title block, the abstract and the bibliography from the record you review.
What a section may contain#
- Text and mathematics,
\subsection,\subsubsection,\paragraph, lists, tables, figures and footnotes. - Theorems and proofs: declare environments with
\newtheoremin the definitions;proofis ready to use. - Cross-references with
\label,\ref,\eqrefand\cref. - Citations with
\cite{key}, using the keys of the draft's references. Papex prints the bibliography; there is no BibTeX. - Unicode text.
A section may not use \documentclass, \usepackage, \begin{document}, \maketitle, \title, \author, \date, \thanks, an abstract or bibliography environment, \bibitem, \section (the heading is separate), \appendix, page styles, \makeatletter, commands containing @, or \input and other file access.
Definitions may use only \newcommand, \renewcommand, \providecommand, \newenvironment, \renewenvironment, \newtheorem, \theoremstyle, \newtheoremstyle, \DeclareMathOperator, \DeclarePairedDelimiter, \newcounter, \numberwithin, \setlength, \setcounter, \crefname, \Crefname, \newlist and \setlist. They cannot redefine sectioning, captions, footnotes, figures, citations, references or links.
Example#
Definitions:
\newtheorem{theorem}{Theorem}[section]
\DeclareMathOperator{\Tr}{Tr}Section 1, "Introduction":
Random $d$-regular graphs are nearly Ramanujan \cite{friedman2008}.
We give a short bound in \cref{thm:gap}.Section 2, "The spectral gap", with the figure fig-gap.png:
\begin{theorem}\label{thm:gap}
For $d \ge 3$, $\lambda_2(G) \le 2\sqrt{d-1} + \varepsilon$ with high probability.
\end{theorem}
\begin{proof}
Bound $\mathbb{E} \Tr A^{2k}$ by counting closed walks.
\end{proof}

- Checks the rules above before it stores anything. The app gets each problem with its section and line.
- Typesets the paper in a sandbox and scans the PDF. A problem found while typesetting appears on the Source tab of your review, at its section and line.
- Shows you the typeset paper. You can edit sections on the Source tab and typeset again. The app can propose a new version of a section; you accept or reject it.
- Keeps the source with the record. Readers can download it unless you turn off Share LaTeX source publicly before you sign.
Signing#
You sign the exact PDF Papex typeset from the current source, after you have read it. The signature covers that PDF's bytes and the record, not the source files. If the source or the record changes, typeset again before you sign. Papex does not check that the mathematics is correct.
