Papex in AI apps
AI apps can prepare work for Papex. You review it, sign it and decide what to publish.
What an AI app can do
With your permission, an AI app connected to Papex can:
- read public Papex profiles and records;
- prepare private Hypothesis and Discovery drafts, and private next versions of records you signed;
- propose changes to a private draft you choose, and look up a reference by DOI, arXiv ID, PMID or ISBN;
- propose supporting links, such as a dataset or code, for one of your records;
- move a draft it prepared to your Trash, if you have not changed it.
It cannot sign, accept its own proposals, make rights statements, publish, or change a published record. Only you do that, in Papex. An AI app is never listed as an author.
Claude and ChatGPT
Claude and ChatGPT connect through Papex's hosted connector at https://mcp.papex.org/mcp.
-
Add Papex in the app.
- Claude on the web, desktop and mobile: open Settings → Connectors. Choose Papex from the directory, or add a custom connector with the address above.
- ChatGPT: add Papex from the plugin directory. Until it is listed there, turn on developer mode and create a connector with the address above.
-
Sign in and allow. The app opens Papex. Sign in, check what the app will be able to do, and select Allow. If the app is not enabled yet, Papex asks for your signature once, then returns you to the app. Under Change you choose:
- Prepare private drafts: create drafts for your review.
- Propose supporting links: suggest links for your records; you keep or drop each one.
- Draft help: send your private drafts to the app so it can suggest changes. It starts chosen; untick it under Change if you do not want your private drafts sent to the app.
A connection lasts up to 90 days. Renew or revoke it in your Workspace under Connected AI.
-
Try it. Ask: "List my private Papex drafts."
Claude Code, Codex and other apps on your computer
These run the Papex MCP package, @papexlabs/mcp, on your computer. It needs Node.js 22.12 or later.
- Claude Code, Codex, Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code and others: in your Workspace, open Connected AI → Add connection. Name the connection, choose its permissions, then copy the configuration for your app. It is shown only once.
The package also has tools for files and folders on your computer, such as uploading files you choose. They are not available through the hosted connector.
Try asking
- "Draft a private Papex hypothesis from the idea we just discussed, with clear falsification criteria."
- "List my private Papex drafts and suggest a sharper claim for the one about protein folding."
- "Check whether DOI 10.1038/s41586-021-03819-2 resolves and propose it as a reference for my draft."

What Papex receives and keeps
- Papex receives only what the app sends in a tool call, such as the fields of a draft or an identifier to look up. It does not receive your conversation.
- Drafts and proposals are saved to your account as private work until you sign, change or delete them.
- Papex holds the key of a hosted connection. Records prepared through it show that the key was held by Papex.
- The hosted connector logs each call's tool name, outcome and timing with a pseudonymous account reference. It does not log what was sent or returned.
- A reference lookup sends only the identifier or web address to public registries: Crossref, DataCite, arXiv, PubMed, Open Library and the Internet Archive.
The Privacy Policy covers the rest.
Turn it off
- In Papex: open Connected AI in your Workspace and choose Revoke. The app loses access at once.
- In the app: remove the Papex connector.
Troubleshooting
- "Enable Claude in Papex → Workspace → Connections": the app is signed in, but its connection is not enabled, has expired or was revoked, or lacks the permission this tool needs, such as Draft help. Open the link in the message and enable or renew the connection.
- The tools look out of date: disconnect Papex in the app and connect again. Some apps keep an old list of tools.
- Sign-in does not finish: allow pop-ups from the app and from papex.org, then try again.

Limits
A Papex record shows who signed which version and when. It is not peer review and does not show that a result is correct.
